I am so excited to share with you some of the images created in the final months of 2011. As we have done in years past, the Rademacher Studio will showcase ’2011 in Portraits’ over the next few weeks. However, we also wanted to include some of the holiday cards that were designed by our daughter, Callie, this year.

As many of you know, we introduced a line of custom and pre-made holiday cards in 2010, and once again, many of our clients chose to take advantage of the service. I know you will agree – each is just as unique as the next. Greg and I were so proud to deliver each and every one of them! Celebrating 35 years as the Rademacher Studio is still hard for both Greg and I to imagine. Choosing the Correct Portrait Size for Your Wall

Once you have selected your image, the biggest decision you’ll make with us will be the appropriate portrait size for your wall. We have been advising our clients for many years about just that, and there are three things to consider when you make this decision.

First, the head size of the photograph you have chosen will differ with each portrait you will hang. The number of individuals in the portrait, their age (adult vs. child), whether the portrait is a close-up or full length – all of these issues come into play when making your decision. The Old Masters painted about 80-90% life-size, which is the optimal size for viewing from a distance.

The second thing to consider is where the portrait might hang and what wall it is going on. Is the ceiling height 8 feet or 15 feet? How large is the room? Can I see it from the kitchen sink, 25 feet away? These factors play a large role in determining the best size. I always advise my clients to choose areas in their homes where they ‘live’ the most, but also where others will see their portrait! Your family room, formal living or dining room, the foyer as you enter your home – all are very common choices for where it could hang.

Finally, consider your budget! I will never question a client regarding their spending decisions - except to help guide them in choosing the best size according to their budget. Looking across the room at your portrait and being able to enjoy the image your many years to come should help guide your decision. But if a smaller size is chosen because of budget, put the portrait within a closer viewing distance. This way, you will always get the enjoyment you should!

Capturing Your Heritage in Photographs

Mee & Dao Vang have always valued family portraiture and first chose to work with Greg in 2003 to photograph their young family. When we sat down to plan our most recent portrait session, Mee had many ideas and wanted to capture her family in formal dress as well as traditional dress from her native culture.

As you can see from all the portraits we have to show, we had quite a productive session. We absolutely loved the variation and colorful cultural dress, and the family was so pleased with the images that Greg created.

Adding an Urban Element to Classic Images

I am so excited to share some of the images from a recent high school senior portrait session! Every year for the past 16 years, Sam has been photographed with his sister. Each of those portraits were the classic, timeless style that his family has always loved and Greg most often creates.

For his senior portrait, however, it was important that he be photographed in his own signature way. He loved the ‘urban’ look that he has seen done in recent years and wanted to replicate that feel in his own images.

Greg loved the chance to create in a whole new environment, and I think you’ll agree there are some amazing images! Consider adding in your own signature look to a Rademacher photograph.
